What is happening

When opening a company file in multi-user mode, an error occurs indicating one of the following:

  • You're trying to work with a company file located on another computer, and this copy of QuickBooks can't reach the server on that computer. error H101 H202 H303 H505 multi-user, . (H202)

Why is this happening

  • Hosting configuration settings are incorrect.
  • The firewall is blocking incoming or outgoing communication to the company file.
  • The .ND file is damaged or incorrect.
  • QuickBooks can't obtain the IP address of the system or server hosting the company file.

Server tasks

Ensure that QuickBooks is installed on the server.
  1. Click the Windows Start button and choose All Programs > QuickBooks.
  2. If QuickBooks or QuickBooks DatabaseServer Manager doesn't appear in the list, it means the program is not installed. error H101 H202 H303 H505 multi-user, . Refer to Installing and configuring QuickBooks for a multi-user or network environment.

If QuickBooks is installed, ensure that hosting mode is set to local files only.
  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Press F2 to open the Product Information window.
  3. Check that in Local Server Information area in the lower left corner, Hosting is set to local files only.
  4. If it is not (off appears instead), choose File > Utilities > Host Multi-user Access. error H101 H202 H303 H505 multi-user, . QuickBooks closes the company file and reopens it.
  5. Press F2 to open the Product Information window again and verify that Hosting is now set to local files only.

If QuickBooks Database Server Manager is installed, restart the QuickBooks Database Server Manager.
  1. Click the Windows Start button, choose Run and enter services.msc in the Open field.
  2. Click OK.
  3. Right-click QuickBooksDB20 (2010), QuickBooksDB19 (2009), QuickBooksDB18 (2008), or QuickBooksDB17 (2007) and select Stop.
  4. Right-click QuickBooksDB20 (2010), QuickBooksDB19 (2009), QuickBooksDB18 (2008), or QuickBooksDB17 (2007) and select Start.
  5. Close the Services window.

Delete and re-create the .ND file.
  1. Ensure that extensions for known file types appear in Windows Explorer:
    1. Right-click the Windows Start button and choose Explore > Tools > Folder Options.
    2. Click the View tab and clear the Hide extensions for known file types checkbox.
    3. On the View tab, select Show hidden files and folders and clear the checkbox for Hide protected system operating files.
    4. Click Yes at the warning and click OK.
    5. Close Windows Explorer.
  2. Delete the .ND file:
    1. Search for *.ND.
    2. In the Results window, right-click the .ND file and choose Delete.
    3. Confirm the deletion.
  3. Recreate the .ND file using Database Server Manager Scan utility:
    1. Click the Windows Start button and choose All Programs > QuickBooks > QuickBooks Database Server Manager.
    2. Click the Scan Folder tab.
    3. Click the Add Folder button and browse to the folder containing the company file.
    4. Select the folder containing the company file and click OK. error H101 H202 H303 H505 multi-user, . The path to the folder appears in the Folders that contain QuickBooks company files field.
    5. Click Scan to start the scanning process.
    6. After the scan completes, click Close.

Client workstations tasks

Be sure that client computers are not trying to host the company file.
  1. Open QuickBooks on each client computer.
  2. Press F2 to view the Product Information window.
  3. Check that in the Local Server Information area in the lower left corner, Hosting is set to Off.
If hosting mode is anything other than Off, switch hosting modes.
  1. Log in to QuickBooks as Administrator.
  2. Choose File > Utilities > Stop Hosting Multi-user Access.
  3. When the message Do you want to stop hosting multi-user access to company files? appears, click Yes.
  4. When the message QuickBooks must close the company file and re-open in single-user mode. error H101 H202 H303 H505 multi-user, . Do you want to continue? appears, click Yes.
  5. Press F2 to view the Product Information window and ensure that Hosting is set to Off.
