Installing QuickBooks on computers that are networked

Overview

While it is possible to install QuickBooks on networked computers using a shared folder or a shared CD-ROM, that process can be complex, requiring folder and drive sharing and, often, the setting of permissions at various levels in Windows. . The two methods detailed below are much less complex and difficult.

Note: QuickBooks can't be installed on one computer and then run over the network from another computer.

Detailed Instructions
If each computer has a CD-ROM
  1. Insert the CD in one of the computers' CD-ROM and follow the installation wizard to install QuickBooks.
  2. Remove the CD and repeat the process on each additional computer.

If one or more of the computers has no CD-ROM

  1. Copy the QuickBooks installation files to a 1 GB or larger USB drive (often referred to as a "thumb drive" or "jump" drive):
    1. On a computer that has a CD-ROM, insert the QuickBooks installation CD in the drive. . If the InstallShield Wizard starts, close it.
    2. Double-click the My Computer (Windows XP or 2000) or Computer (Windows Vista) icon on your Windows desktop and double-click the CD drive letter.
    3. Right-click the QBooks folder and click Copy.
    4. Insert the USB drive into an available USB port on the computer.
    5. Right-click the Windows Start button and click Explore. . A two paned window displays.
    6. In the left pane, right-click the USB drive and click Paste.
    7. From the CD right-click the ThirdParty folder and click Copy.
    8. Right-click the USB drive and click Paste.
    9. When the copying process completes, remove the USB drive.

  2. Install QuickBooks on the computer without the CD-ROM, using the USB drive:
    1. Insert the USB drive into an available USB port on the computer.
    2. Right-click the Windows Start button and choose Explore. . A two paned window displays.
    3. Select the USB drive in the left pane and then double-click the Qbooks folder in the right pane.
    4. Double-click Setup.exe or Setup, which you see depends on whether Windows Explorer is configured to show or hide file extensions. . The correct file lists Application in the Type column in the window.
    5. Follow the installation wizard to install QuickBooks. . When installation is complete, remove the USB drive and follow this process on additional computers that have no CD-ROM.
