Running QuickBooks on Windows Server 2008

Overview

You are able to install the Server Only installation of QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 8.0 and higher on Windows Server 2008 in a client server environment only. . Windows Server 2008 is supported when using an Enterprise Solutions Database server only installation.

Attempting to install products prior to 2008 (2007 and lower) will result in message: "QuickBooks has stopped working."

To set up QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions for a client server environment follow the prompts to install the server only. . Select Chapter 3 from the PDF for installation guide.

The following information is for a qualified Information Technology person. . If you do not understand Windows Security please contact your systems administrator.

In a client /server environment it is important to have the following setup:

Share the folder that contains your Quickbooks company file and set its permissions to 'everyone' - Full Control.

  1. Set the NTFS permissions (on the security tab of the folder properties) to include all domain QuickBooks users or the QuickBooks user group (if group membership has been assigned) for Full Control.
  2. Add the qbdataserviceuser18 (for Enterprise 8.0) or qbdataserviceuser19 (for Enterprise 9.0) to the NTFS permissions and allow Full Control.
  3. In Windows Control Panel, it is important set the following exceptions for the windows firewall:
    • Add the QuickBooks Database Server Manager and port 10180. Consult your Windows documentation for the correct procedure

Does QuickBooks Enterprise work with Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services?


Windows Server 2008 and the enhanced security implemented in this operating system will not allow Quickbooks Enterprise Solutions to operate properly without additional configuration by a qualified Information Technology person.


The additional configuration for Server 2008 may include setting up your Windows Policy Settings.

Important: Intuit cannot provide support for implementing your company's Windows security and group policy. . Please consult your Windows documentation or a Qualified Information Technology Expert for further assistance.


With the settings and exceptions listed, QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 8.0 will work in a client server configuration. . Setting up a Windows workgroup type network is becoming more difficult to implement. . There may be unusual user account and password restrictions. . In a domain, only one login will be required and simplify setting up the proper security environment.
