Error -13,0 "An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to access the company file" when converting a file to QuickBooks 2008
What is happening

When trying to convert a company file from an earlier version of QuickBooks to QuickBooks 2008 the conversion process fails and the following error occurs:

An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to access the company file. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact Intuit Technical Support and provide them with the following error codes: (-13,0)
Why is this happening

This can be caused by:

  • Shortcuts on the icon bars to features that are no longer in the product such as the Open PO List
  • Damaged Admin user password
  • Damaged Users
How to fix the problem
  • Remove the offending shortcuts
  • Change the Admin user password
  • Delete all users but the Admin user
Detailed Instructions

In the original version of QuickBooks (the one you are converting from):

To remove shortcuts from the Icon Bar:

  1. Login as one of your users
  2. Click on View>Customize Icon Bar
  3. Click the Open PO List under the Icon bar Content
  4. Click the Delete button
  5. With each user follow steps 1-5 until none have the Open PO List as a shortcut.

If you continue to get this message, there may be other shortcuts causing the problem as well. You can remove all the shortcuts from the icon bar and set them up again later.

To change the Admin user password:

  1. Log in as the Admin user
  2. Click on Company>Set Up Users and Passwords>Change your password

To delete all users but the Admin user:

  1. Log in as the Admin user
  2. Click on Company>Set Up Users and Passwords>Set up Users
  3. On the User List, click on each user that is not the (Admin User) one at a time
  4. Click Delete User
