Error 80070057: incorrect parameter/insufficient permission

Error: "80070057 the parameter is incorrect" and "You do not have sufficient permissions to delete files..."

What is happening

When attempting to open a company file, the following messages appear:

80070057 the parameter is incorrect.

You do not have sufficient permissions to delete files in the specified folder. can't delete file, permission to delete file, incorrect parameter, . To use QuickBooks in a multi-user environment, you must have read/write access and create/delete rights to the folder where the company file is stored.

Multiple attempts to open the company file eventually allows access.

Why is this happening

There are two possible causes for this:

  • An attempt was made to open the company file by double-clicking on the file, rather than by opening the file through QuickBooks.
  • BitDefender blocks uncommon ports when there is data traffic between computers. can't delete file, permission to delete file, incorrect parameter, . QuickBooks 2008, 2007, and 2006 use the database service running on the host computer. can't delete file, permission to delete file, incorrect parameter, . This database service communicates through ports 10180 (2008) ,10172 (2007) and 10160 (2006) respectively. can't delete file, permission to delete file, incorrect parameter, . BitDefender blocks these ports by default.
How to fix the problem

If the error occurs because of double-clicking the data file icon, select the QuickBooks File menu and then select Open or Restore Company, and follow the instructions to browse to the data file.

If you have internet security software installed on your computer, you will need to exclude C:\Users\Public\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks Company Files\ folder from Antivirus & spyware scans.  (On Windows XP, the path would be C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks Company Files\.)

To confirm that BitDefender is blocking the QuickBooks communication, uninstall or disable BitDefender. can't delete file, permission to delete file, incorrect parameter, . If BitDefender was blocking the QuickBooks communications, QuickBooks will communicate without error and the error will not appear.

Detailed Instructions

To configure BitDefender from blocking QuickBooks communication:

  1. Select the BitDefender 10.0 main menu and select Antivirus.
  2. Select the Custom level.
  3. Click Exclude path from scan, and then click the New item button.
  4. Click the mapped drive or UNC path that is used to browse to the company file (for example, "Q:\").

If you are unable to successfully prevent BitDefender from blocking QuickBooks communication, contact BitDefender Technical Support at: 1-800-388-8062 - option 2.
