Based on government requirements, we recommend that you use the following characters when you enter your company's legal name and address in QuickBooks.

Company Legal Name

  • Letters (A, B, C)

  • Numbers (1, 2, 3)

  • Spaces

  • Ampersand (&)

  • Dash (-)

Note: Only the first 35 characters of the legal name are accepted by the IRS. payroll taxes, company, valid characters, . Do not abbreviate the name or omit spaces. payroll taxes, company, valid characters, . Only use the prefix "The" as the first word if it is followed by just one other word. Formal suffixes with individual names (MD, CPA, Jr., Sr., etc.) are accepted; however, general or other titles such as owner, Mr., Mrs. payroll taxes, company, valid characters, . or Dr. payroll taxes, company, valid characters, . are not accepted. payroll taxes, company, valid characters, . If the business is a sole proprietorship, the legal name is the name of the owner.
