Creating items for estimates

When you set up items for estimates, keep the following tips in mind:

  • If you set up your items to track cost as well as sales, you can see your costs as well as the sales price on the estimate onscreen. However, when you print the estimate, the printed estimate shows only the sales price.

  • If you're transferring a summary estimate into QuickBooks from an outside estimating program, it's a good idea to set up an item in QuickBooks for each project phase you use in your estimating program.

    You can also create subitems to get more detail on the phases. For example, you could set up an item for the Plans and Permits phase with subitems for Plans, Building Permits, and City License.
