Test your direct Internet connection

Important: Print these instructions. Then do each task below in order.

Task #1: Test your Internet connection

To do this task

  1. Exit QuickBooks.

  2. Restart your computer.

  3. Open a Web browser (for example, Internet Explorer).

  4. Visit one of these Web sites for detecting problems with Web browsers.

    Note: You are not sending any financial information to them.

    If you cannot connect to one of these sites, there is a problem with your Internet connection, network, computer or other hardware, or Microsoft Windows. For example, a slow connection could be caused by too many other people sharing the same network.

    This problem must be fixed before you can access any online services through QuickBooks. Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or network administrator. QuickBooks Technical Support cannot help you solve this problem.

  5. Click the Test my browser or Begin check button.

    If your Web browser does not pass the test or the results show that you do not have 128-bit encryption, download and install a newer version.

    Visit the Web site of the browser you use for information about downloading and installing the most recent version.

  6. Exit your Web browser.

Task #2: Check the Internet Connection Setup settings for QuickBooks

To do this task

  1. Start QuickBooks.

  2. Go to the Help menu and click Internet Connection Setup.

  3. Follow the instructions to choose how you connect to the Internet:

    • Click Use the following connection if your ISP requires you to always start its proprietary program to connect to the Internet. For example, some America Online (AOL) accounts work like this. You might also choose this option if you have more than one way to access the Internet and want to use a specific one.

      After choosing this option, click the connection QuickBooks should use in the list, and then click Next to go on.

    • Click Use my computer's Internet connection settings if your computer is correctly set up to access the Internet without you having to do anything. If you are not sure, choose this option.

      After choosing this option, click Next to go on.

    • If you need more information about how to set up an Internet connection for QuickBooks, click Help.

  4. Click Done to finish.

Task #3: Check that QuickBooks can connect to the Internet

To do this task

  1. Go to the Help menu and click Update QuickBooks. Open the QuickBooks Update Service

  2. Click the Update Now button.

  3. Click Get Updates, then watch the status bar as the update proceeds.

    If QuickBooks is not able to connect to the Internet:

    • If you have a firewall, make sure that its security settings allow QuickBooks to access the Internet.

      • Port 80 (for HTTP) and port 443 (for HTTPS) should be enabled.

      • These two files should be allowed to access the Internet: qbw32.exe (the QuickBooks program) and qbupdate.exe (the QuickBooks Update Agent).

    • Contact your ISP or network administrator for more assistance.

Task #4: Check that QuickBooks can connect to your financial institution

Note: This task is only for people who use online banking.

To do this task

  1. Open the Online Banking Center. Open the Online Banking Center

  2. Connect to your financial institution as you usually would.

    If you receive an error message, the financial institution's servers may be busy or not working. Wait 15 minutes and try again.

If you are still having problems and your ISP and financial institution have not been able to help, check the Go onlineQuickBooks Support site on the Web or try the Go onlineQuickBooks Community sites, where many special case situations are discussed by other QuickBooks users.

You might also talk with your accountant for assistance. If you don't have an accountant, Intuit can help you find one.
