What is TWAIN?
TWAIN is a standard software protocol and applications programming interface (API) that lets your scanner communicate with a software application (for example, Intuit Check Solution).
A bit of trivia ... TWAIN is not an acronym! The word came from British author Rudyard Kipling's poem "The Ballad of East and West" ("...and never the twain shall meet..."). The term was intended to characterize the difficulty at the time (1992) of connecting scanners and computers.
Most scanners have a TWAIN driver that you can install from the CD that came with your scanner. You can also usually download the driver from the vendor's Web site (look in the support or downloads area).
Before you can scan checks, make sure you've installed your TWAIN-compatible scanner. First, make sure you've installed your scanner so it works outside of QuickBooks. Then you need to install the software so you can scan and process checks in QuickBooks. For installation instructions, click here.
