Change the rate for state disability or unemployment insurance

If your state unemployment insurance rate changes, you can enter the new rate by editing the appropriate payroll item.

For details about the state unemployment tax rates for each state, go to the Go onlineSupported State and Local Payroll Tax Information.

For some states, the state disability insurance rate is supplied by the tax table and you cannot edit it. If the rate changes, check to see if you have the current tax table.

In other states, if your state disability insurance rate changes, you can enter the new rate by editing the appropriate payroll item.

To do this task

  1. Go to the Lists menu and click Payroll Item List. Shortcut

  2. Select your state disability insurance or your state unemployment insurance payroll item.

If your state disability insurance is collected by a private agency, the associated payroll item may be set up as other tax, not state disability.

How do I edit the rate of a user-defined other tax payroll item?

  3. Click Payroll Item at the bottom of the list and click Edit Payroll Item.

  4. Click Next until you see the tax rate window.

  5. Enter the new rate in the Company rate or Employee rate field.

  6. Click Next until you can click Finish.
