You can add or change a payroll service at any time. When you sign up for a
service, you are assigned a 16-digit service key that authenticates you when
you try to download tax table updates.
If you sign up from QuickBooks (Employees > Payroll > Turn on Payroll in QuickBooks), your service key is recorded in your company file
If you sign up by phone, the service representative will give you a service
key, which you must enter in your company file.
If you do payroll for more than one company
From the Employees menu:
Choose Payroll > Enter Payroll Service Key
if you don't already have a payroll service.
Choose My Payroll Service > Manage Service Key if
you already have a payroll service.
Click Add or Edit depending on whether
you are adding a new service key or changing an existing service key.
Enter the service key for your company, and check that the EIN is correct. (QuickBooks displays the EIN from the Company Information window.)
If your EIN has changed
QuickBooks activates your payroll service, and displays a confirmation
If you are adding a payroll service for the first time, be sure the Open Payroll Setup checkbox is checked, and click Finish.
QuickBooks downloads the latest payroll tax table updates and launches the Payroll Setup interview to guide you through setting up your first payroll.
If you forgot your service key or never received it via e-mail after
purchasing a payroll subscription over the phone,
click here to retrieve it.
If you are setting up a new company file for a company that already has a
payroll service, enter the service key from your previous company file. To find
the service key, open the previous company file, go to the Employees menu, and choose Payroll Service Activities > Manage Service Key.
