Use the Challenge Phrase for Password Recovery

When you create an Administrator password for your company file, you must also select and answer a challenge question. If you forget the Administrator password or want to reset it, QuickBooks asks you to answer the challenge question to prove your identity.

Set up a challenge phrase

Only the QuickBooks Administrator can do this.

To do this task

  1. Choose Company > Set Up Users and Passwords > Change Your Password.

  2. Enter a new password and password confirmation.

  3. Click the Challenge Question drop-down arrow and select a question.

  4. In the Answer field, enter the answer to your challenge question. QuickBooks recommends that you choose an answer that's easy to remember but difficult for someone else to guess.

  5. Click OK.

Use the challenge phrase to reset the Administrator password

Only the QuickBooks Administrator can do this.

To do this task

  1. In the QuickBooks Login window, click the "I forgot my password" link. QuickBooks opens the Reset QuickBooks Administrator Password window and displays your challenge question.

  2. In the Answer field, enter the correct answer for your challenge question.

Note: If you don't remember the answer to your challenge question, click the "I forgot my answer" link. QuickBooks then prompts you to apply for a password reset code.

  3. Click OK. QuickBooks confirms that it removed your password and challenge phrase answer.

  4. Click Close.

  5. In the Change QuickBooks Password window, enter a new password and password confirmation.

  6. Click the Challenge Question drop-down arrow and select a question.

  7. In the Answer field, enter the answer to your challenge question. QuickBooks recommends that you choose an answer that's easy to remember but difficult for someone else to guess.

  8. Click OK.
