About choosing recommended or alternate setup

About multi-user QuickBooks

There are two ways to set up QuickBooks to host multi-user access:

  • Recommended setup: For the most reliable multi-user setup, Intuit recommends that you install QuickBooks or the QuickBooks Server on the same computer as the company file and set up that computer to host multi-user access.

What are the steps for the recommended setup?

Does the recommended setup require an additional user license?

No additional license is required for the computer that contains the company file, as long as the QuickBooks software on that computer is used only to host multi-user access to the company file. Refer to your QuickBooks license agreement for more information.

  • Alternate setup: If you cannot install QuickBooks or the QuickBooks Server on the same computer as the company file, you can use one computer to host multi-user access to company files. Click the Alternate Setup button to have QuickBooks set up hosting for you on your computer.

What's the difference between the recommended and alternate setup?

Note: If you have already set up multi-user QuickBooks but you still can't open the company file, review the troubleshooting information.
