Create items

About items

These instructions tell you how to create items one at a time. If you are creating inventory or service items, you can use another window to add or edit multiple inventory and service items and paste from Excel.

To do this task

  1. Go to the Lists menu and click Item List. Shortcut

  2. Click Item at the bottom of the list and then click New.

  3. Select the type of item that you want to create.

  4. Fill in the fields.

  5. (Optional) Click Custom Fields to add your own customized fields.

  6. Save the item.

You can also set up an item "on the fly" as you need it. More...

For example, if on an invoice you enter the name of an item that has not been set up, QuickBooks will ask you if you'd like to set the item up. You can set it up then without leaving the invoice.
