About the Custom Fields window

This window shows the custom fields you have set up for items. If no fields are listed, you haven't set any up yet.

Information you enter in a field becomes part of the information associated with the item.

  • To rename a custom field

    You can rename a custom field in every list or transaction in QuickBooks. When you rename a custom item field, QuickBooks changes the name of the field on all transactions where the field appears. When you rename a custom name field, QuickBooks changes the name of the field on all list entries where the field appears.

    For custom items

    To do this task

    1. Go to the Lists menu and click Item List.

    2. In the Items list, double-click the item you want to rename.

    3. Click Custom Fields and then click Define Fields.

    4. Click in the Label field with the custom field to rename and change the name.

    5. Make sure that the Use checkbox is selected for the field.

    6. Click OK twice.

      The name of the field is changed in all transactions where the field appears.

    For custom names

    To do this task

    1. Click Customer Center.

    2. In the Customer:Job list, double-click any name (it doesn't matter which one you choose).

    3. Click the Additional Info tab and then click Define Fields.

    4. In the Set up Custom Fields for Names window, change the name in the Label field.

    5. Make sure that the Use checkbox is selected for the list you want.

    6. Click OK.

      The name of the field is changed in all list entries where the field appears.

  • To remove a custom field

    You can remove a custom item or name field from every form and list in which it appears.

    Remove a custom item

    To do this task

    1. Go to the Lists menu and click Item List.

    2. In the Item list, double-click any item (it doesn't matter which one you choose).

    3. In the Edit Item window, click Custom Fields.

    4. Click Define fields.

    5. In the Set up Custom Fields for Items window, clear the Use checkbox next to the item to remove, and then click OK twice.

    Remove a custom name

    To do this task

    1. Click the Customers icon, Employees icon, or Vendors icon to open the Customers & Jobs, Vendors, or Employees list.

    2. Double-click a name.

    3. Click the Additional Info tab and then click Define Fields.

    4. In the Set up Custom Fields for Names window, clear the checkboxes in the list from which you want to remove the name.

    5. Click OK twice.
