Before trying these troubleshooting suggestions, make sure that you have done everything to prepare your Microsoft® Small Business Accounting/Office Accounting file for conversion.
While troubleshooting problems, you may want to view the QuickBooks Conversion Tool error message log files.
The QuickBooks Conversion Tool creates two log files that can assist with conversion issues. To find them, go to the place you installed the Conversion Tool (by default, C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks Conversion Tool), and then open the CompanyName_convertLogs folder for your company. Log files are as follows:
Conversion.log: An easy-to-read log file that contains list information that passed and failed during the conversion and is used to diagnose common conversion problems.
Master.log: The main log file that shows the conversion history. If the conversion stops, the last line indicates the error that stopped the conversion.
If you don't see your particular problem in the list, check the QuickBooks Support site on the Web.
Or, talk with your accountant for assistance. If you don't have an accountant, Intuit can help you find one.
I get an error when I try to start the QuickBooks Conversion Tool
Make sure that your computer meets the minimum system
requirements to run the QuickBooks Conversion Tool.
Make sure that Small Business Accounting/Office Accounting, QuickBooks, and the QuickBooks Conversion Tool are all installed on the same computer.
Make sure that Small Business Accounting/Office Accounting and QuickBooks are not running when you start the QuickBooks Conversion Tool.
Make sure that the size of the QuickBooks conversion tool that you downloaded is at least 20 MB.
If you continue to receive the error, uninstall the QuickBooks Conversion Tool, download the tool again, and install the tool again.
QuickBooks opens during the conversion process
This can occur if either QuickBooks or the empty QuickBooks company file used to hold your Small Business Accounting/Office Accounting data is not up to date.
When this occurs:
Leave QuickBooks open.
If a QuickBooks message appears asking you to get the latest update to QuickBooks, click No.
Any other answer will cause the QuickBooks Conversion Tool to detect an error and the conversion process will stop.
I get an unexpected error after selecting the Small Business Accounting/Office Accounting data folder
Make sure that QuickBooks is not currently running.
Make sure that you select the correct location for your Small Business Accounting company file. By default, this is "C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\My Documents\Small Business Accounting\Companies\CompanyFileName.sbc
Notes Do not select a backup company file (*.zip). If you want to convert a company that is stored in a backup file, first restore the company using Small Business Accounting/Office Accounting.
If you have not yet done so, in Small Business Accounting/Office Accounting, verify the data integrity of the file and make a backup.
I get the error "Utilities.cs; OpenQBSDK(); qbsdkticket is empty"
This error appears at the end of the log files described above. It can occur when the Conversion Utility cannot locate the empty QuickBooks company file used to hold your Small Business Accounting/Office Accounting data.
To solve this problem:
Go to the File menu and click Open Company.
Go to the place you installed the Conversion Tool (by default, C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks Conversion Tool), and then open the shellfiles folder. Open the shell file for your version of QuickBooks - for example, Shell2009.QBW. (This file is version specific; choose the shell file for your version of QuickBooks.)
Exit QuickBooks and start the QuickBooks Conversion Tool again.
I get the error "Object Reference Not Set To An Instance Of An Object"
This error appears at the end of the log files described above. It can occur when converting an unusually large number of the same type of record. For example, it can occur when converting a large number of Journal Entries. It can also occur when your computer does not meet the minimum requirements to run the conversion tool.
Reboot your computer and do not open any programs except the Conversion Tool. Then try again.
Run the conversion tool on a computer that meets the recommended requirements: that is, a computer with at least a 1 GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM. Converting a large list of items requires a fast computer with a significant amount of RAM.
Note: You will have to copy your Small Business Accounting/Office Accounting company data files to the faster computer and install the necessary programs (Small Business Accounting/Office Accounting, QuickBooks, and the QuickBooks Conversion Tool).
If you do not have access to a computer that meets the recommended system requirements, or if you encounter this error on a computer that does meet the recommended requirements, contact customer support.
I get error 28017, "User abort"
This error appears in the Conversion.log file if you cancel the conversion before it is complete. If you have a large Small Business Accounting/Office Accounting file, it can take several hours to complete the conversion. As long as your mouse is still responding, the tool is working. Re-run the QuickBooks Conversion Tool and allow enough time for the process to complete.
I get error 28029, "Expression step error encountered"
This issue typically occurs only if the local computer does not meet the recommended system requirements: that is, a computer with at least a 1 GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM. Copy your Small Business Accounting/Office Accounting company data files to a computer that meets those requirements, install the necessary programs (Small Business Accounting/Office Accounting, QuickBooks, and the QuickBooks Conversion Tool), and run the conversion tool again.
