This document summarizes changes and improvements made in
Release 9 of all editions of QuickBooks 2006 for Windows. Release 9
includes all changes that have been made to your QuickBooks 2006
software since it was first released.
Installing Release 9
To update your QuickBooks program with the Release 9 changes,
close QuickBooks and reopen QuickBooks. At the prompt to install
the update now, answer "Yes." The update process may take several
minutes. (If you choose not to update when you open QuickBooks, the
message will appear each time you open QuickBooks until the update
is completed.) After completing the update, we recommend that you
restart your computer.
Installing Release 9 in a Multi-User Environment
If you use QuickBooks in multi-user mode, Intuit strongly
recommends installing the product release on each computer using
QuickBooks. After downloading the product release to your specified
shared file location, you will be prompted when you open QuickBooks
to install on each computer that shares the data file. For more
information on sharing updates in a multi user environment, choose
Update QuickBooks from the Help menu, click
Help in the Update QuickBooks window, and then select
the help topic link titled Sharing updates in a multi-user
environment.
Summary of Release 9 Changes
The following list summarizes all changes or improvements made in
Release 9:
- Accountant's
Copy
QuickBooks will now convert Accountant's Copy backups (.qbx)
created in QuickBooks 2005 to QuickBooks 2006 Accountant's copy
files (.qba). (R5)

Payable
QuickBooks will no longer generate error code 00000 16431 when
creating a transfer from a journal entry in the accounts payable
register. (R5)

QuickBooks will no longer generate an error when modifying an
invoice on a memorized report, QuickZoomed from a Sales Tax
Liability report. (R5)
QuickBooks has improved performance when saving Invoice forms.

QuickZoom report from a Sales Tax Liability Report. (R5)
- Alerts
QuickBooks will no longer display duplicate alerts when logging
into a company file in Multi User mode. (R5)
QuickBooks now shows correct information when alerting users of
insufficient disk space when creating an Accountant's Copy or
Portable Company File. (R7)
QuickBooks will now display descriptive text explaining the
following Online Banking error messages: OL - 60, OL-334, OL-393,
OL-301, OL-202, OL-332, OL- 206. (R7)

QuickBooks will no longer close when clicking Record on a
transaction in the register. (R5)
- Budgets
QuickBooks will now correctly update dates on budgets and
forecasts. (R6)
- Centers
QuickBooks now includes the option to toggle the Navigation Bar on
and off. (R3)
Improved navigation, Using Keyboard shortcuts to navigate through
the Customer and Vendor lists. (R3)
- Cleanup
QuickBooks will no longer display the error code 16438 56631 when
running the Cleanup utility. (R5)
- Credit
Memos
QuickBooks will now recognize payments entered via Make Deposits
screen when applying payments from the Invoice form. (R5)
- Database
QuickBooks now provides better messaging when connection to the
database has been lost. (R3)
QuickBooks no longer displays the error "-1,0" when migrating
company data files with no Admin record name to QuickBooks 2006.

QuickBooks no longer displays the error "C=224" when backing up or
rebuilding company data files. (R3)

Links between Bills and Bill Credits no longer become broken when
printing Bill Payments or Bill Payment Stubs. (R3)
QuickBooks no longer displays the error "C=88" when memorizing a
report that contains more than 6349 items. (R3)
QuickBooks no longer fails the conversion process with the error,
"-1,0", when encountering special characters in the company file
name. (R5)
QuickBooks will no longer generate error "-6108,105" when opening
a local company file using a UNC path without proper share
permissions. (R5)
QuickBooks will no longer generate error 20020 81695 when losing
connection to the database. (R5)
QuickBooks will no longer generate the error, "QuickBooks is
unable to complete this operation and needs to restart. QuickBooks
will restart automatically." when adding a new name to the data
file. (R5)
Improved messaging was added when encountering the error
"-6177,0", opening a QuickBooks company file in a network
environment. (R5)
QuickBooks will no longer revert to the "no company open" screen
when opening a company file with a damaged name record. (R5)
QuickBooks will no longer display the error, "-6023,0" when
upgrading a company file with User list damage from Enterprise 5.0
to Enterprise 6.0 (R5)
Improvements that address issues reported by a small number of
QuickBooks 2006 users (sometimes indicated by the program exiting
with an unrecoverable error, reporting damage to transactions in
the QBWIN.LOG file, or otherwise exhibiting unexpected results
during normal program use.) R6 identifies and fixes any existing
issues and prevents future issues. (R6)
Rebuild now repairs damage reported when data Verify fails on COGS
and Inventory Asset accounts. (R7)
Rebuild now repairs damage to broken links in company file that
are missing a sibling record. (R7)
QuickBooks no longer fails the conversion process with the error
"-7,0" when updating a company file from QuickBooks
Enterprise Solutions 4.0 to QBES 6.0. (R7)
- Estimates
QuickBooks will no longer display markup for items on invoices
created from change orders. (R7)
- File
Operations
Deposited sales receipts will no longer appear to be linked to the
deposit once the sales receipt has been deleted. (R2)
QuickBooks trial versions will now close company files properly
when using the "X" from the menu bar. (R5)
QuickBooks will no longer restart when saving a transaction, after
changing the currently selected name to another name type.

QuickBooks will no longer allow backup of company data to continue
if encountering data damage during the Verify phase of the backup
process. (R5)
QuickBooks now launches the Windows XP CD Burning Wizard when
backing up company data to Compact Disc in Microsoft Windows XP.

QuickBooks will no longer generate an error code when restoring a
portable company file to a network drive. (R7)
The QuickBooks tab of the File Properties dialog box in Windows
Explorer will now show version information for Portable Company

QuickBooks will now allow auto-recall of information on sales
forms. (R7)
QuickBooks will no longer display a C=94 error when customizing a
Purchase Order. (R7)
QuickBooks will now prefill the Manufacturers Part Number
on Purchase Orders created from Sales Orders. (R7)
QuickBooks will no longer display the error C=94 when clicking
Customizing a Purchase order and selecting 'total Label" on Format
tab. (R7)

Improved Help topics added to cover areas of Sales Orders,
Inventory, and check printing. Thank you for submitting Help
feedback and helping to improve QuickBooks. (R5)
QuickBooks now displays Help pages correctly on computers using
Internet Explorer 7. (R7)
QuickBooks has implemented fixes for typos, missing text, index
entries and broken hyperlinks in Help entries. (R7)

QuickBooks no longer displays error, "Error 1911" during the
installation of QuickBooks 2006. (R3)
- Inventory
QuickBooks will correctly display quantity on hand values when
adding new inventory items. (R5)
QuickBooks will no longer display inventory item history messages
in the qbwin.log file during migration from a prior version.

- Licensing
QuickBooks will now refresh the number of licensed seats at the
time seats are added to the product license. (R7)
- Lists
Using the list Search function from the customer list in multi
user mode will no longer prevent other logged on users from
entering transactions in other areas of the program. (R2)
QuickBooks no longer displays a warning message when promoting or
demoting an item in "Flat Mode" in the Item List. (R3)
Changing an Account to a Sub-Account is no longer slow when using
the mouse to drag and drop the account. (R3)
QuickBooks no longer generates a runtime error when moving bank
accounts using drag and drop. (R3)
Cancelling a customer record after adding a Ship To address will
now warn that the edits will not be saved. (R3)
The Space Bar can now be used to select or de-select list elements
in reports. (R4)
QuickBooks will no longer exit with the error 16370 50136 when
editing employee notes after accessing the Edit Employee function
from the Sales Rep list. (R7)
QuickBooks no longer exits unexpectedly when adding a new name to
company files with specific data damage. QuickBooks also
incorporates code that fixes this specific data damage. (R7)

Transactions
QuickBooks will no longer display the error "Assertion Failed"
when entering a memorized invoice with items with zero quantity
available. (R3)
Memorized checks will now retain their "to be printed" status.

QuickBooks will no longer remove the Vendor address when adding
additional line items on a memorized Purchase Order form.

Hosting
QuickBooks now includes better messaging to explain how to set up
Multi User access in Recommended Mode. (R3)
QuickBooks no longer exits with error 16438 62491 when it
encounters certain networking situations. (R7)

Analysis
Creating Expert Analysis reports will no longer display an Active
X error, and will now generate the report correctly. (R2)

Financial Statement Designer
QuickBooks will now allow access to Financial Statement Designer
in Multi User mode. (R5)
Statement dates in columns now update if date range is changed.

QuickBooks has fixed the "Send To" export function,
enabling export of statements to Microsoft Excel. (R7)
Financial Statement Designer now warns if concurrent installations
of QuickBooks 2006 and QuickBooks 2007 are running when attempting

QuickBooks now includes access to (Zipingo, www.zipingo.com) from

Invoice Manager no longer displays an alert when creating a new

QuickBooks Invoice Manager now incorporates multiple improvements
to forms customization. (R7)
Correction made to discrepancy between column name and default

Invoice Manager now has hotkeys for Header and Print in the
Additional Customization window. (R7)
Invoice Manager Home page now displays identically in Internet

Invoice Manager now incorporates safeguards to prevent users from
deleting or inactivating all form templates. (R7)
Invoice Manager now adjusts name and address fields when a logo is
added to a form to prevent overlap. (R7)
QuickBooks no longer exits with error "16499 26054"
when clicking Print Preview in the Layout Designer. (R7)
QuickBooks will display a thumbnail preview correctly in Landscape
mode. (R7)

Shipping Manager will no longer display an "X Post" error when
attempting to use Shipping Manager. (R9)

Sending log files to Intuit will no longer generate an error.

Payroll
QuickBooks will no longer display an error "404 Page not Found"
when adding an EIN to an existing subscription in a new company
file. (R5)

Payroll & Direct Deposit
QuickBooks will no longer display a prompt to "Send Payroll Data"
when there are no paychecks to send, for customers who have
paychecks marked to send from prior to signing up for Assisted
Payroll or Direct Deposit. (R5)
QuickBooks now includes prompts to help customers remember PIN
requirements for sending payroll data. (R5)
Migrating to Assisted Payroll service from Direct Deposit now
correctly handles payroll tax form payments and processing.

QuickBooks no longer displays the error, "Error 557" when viewing
the welcome page after upgrading from a prior version. (R3)
Dates will now correctly display when creating paychecks using
Semi-weekly payroll setting. (R3)
QuickBooks now includes the ability to e-mail paycheck stubs.

QuickBooks no longer crashes when adding a payroll liability
agency to a payroll item in the Pay Liabilities window in Multi
User mode. (R3)
QuickBooks will no longer display empty rows at the bottom of the
"Select Employees to Pay" screen after creating paychecks.

QuickBooks will no longer prompt users to run Payroll Checkup when
modifying payroll items or entering in Year to Date transactions.

Improved messaging was added to guide customers when entering in a
release date for an employee. (R5)
QuickBooks will now allow customers to pay taxes with negative
balances, if they are paid with other taxes and the total payment
is not negative. This helps handle the case of prior overpayments
within a filing period. (R5)
Payroll Liability Payment Frequency now automatically links Social
Security and Medicare Employee and Company paid payroll items when
adding liability payment frequencies to the payroll item.

Improved messaging was added to provide better understanding when
setting up an Owner Employee. (R5)
The Payroll Summary report will now correctly reflect paycheck
rates when the last paycheck was voided. (R5)
QuickBooks no longer tries to recalculate on the "Review
Paycheck" form if a user toggles between the "Lock Net Pay"
and "Unlock Net Pay" states. Now the form only recalculates if a
deliberate change is made to fields on the form. (R7)
QuickBooks Help has been updated to explain that pre-printed W2
forms from the IRS are not intended by the IRS to be used with
computer programs such as QuickBooks. (R7)
QuickBooks now displays the "Federal Annually" deposit
frequency in the Deposit Frequency column of the Payroll Item List.

QuickBooks Employee menu has been changed to simplify, streamline
and more accurately describe whether or not a company file has an
associated Payroll subscription. Most notably, users must choose a
payroll method before payroll menu items appear. (R7)
QuickBooks now displays the current correct amount for Payroll
Item Limit on the payroll item list. (R7)
The IRS changed Form 940 for tax year 2006. This update to
QuickBooks was required to fully support the new Form 940, in
addition to changes that will be a part of a Payroll update for
Payroll Service subscribers. In order to accurately create your
2006 Form 940 you will need this latest release and the Payroll
Update that contains the new Form 940 for 2006. (R9)
QuickBooks Payroll no longer rounds salary items to the nearest
dollar amount. (R9)
Improved workflow when creating new payroll items using EZ-Payroll
Item Setup.
Payroll Setup now correctly appends duplicate Local Tax items with
more than 31 characters. (R9)
QuickBooks payroll now correctly handles blank Social Security
numbers when sending data to tax forms. (R9)

Direct Deposit
Clearing Direct Deposit settings for an employee now works
correctly when using multiple Direct Deposit accounts. (R3)
QuickBooks now only allows Cancelling an in-process Direct Deposit
transmission when the server has not received it. This ensures
customers will receive the Direct Deposit transmission
confirmation. (R5)
QuickBooks will now correctly save the second Direct Deposit bank
account on an employee. (R5)
QuickBooks will no longer exit with the error C=44, followed by
error "-1,0" when updating from a prior version.

QuickBooks no longer displays Error, "404" when viewing the
Welcome Page after entering the Disk Delivery Service Key.

Printing custom filter results will now print the items displayed

The Print Button on the General Journal Entry screen now defaults
to printing the most recent journal entry. (R7)

Updates
QuickBooks will now display a progress monitor during company file
updates. (R6)
QuickBooks no longer displays the error message "This data file
cannot be used because it was not completely updated. Please
restore your backup" if another user logs in while a company file
is being updated. (R6)

Error Reporting
QuickBooks will no longer display the error code 08328 07843 when
editing a transaction in multi user mode. (R2)
Error codes 16738 69980, 16438 56631, 00000 16431, 16361 56670 and
16617 91519 were fixed. Thank you for sending the error reports and
helping to improve QuickBooks.
QuickBooks has fixed an issue in which certain error code numbers
were being reported incorrectly (R7)
QuickBooks will no longer close with the error code 20022 02072
during program start up. (R7)
QuickBooks will no longer close with the error code 16384 27882
when recording register transactions, when prompted to "save
transaction" before closing a company file. (R7)

Merchant Account Service
Choosing to "Get Funding Status" will no longer display error
messages for Merchant Account Service users with "TicketOnly"
transactions. (R3)
QuickBooks Merchant Account Service will now have a batch cut-off
time of 3:00 PM PDT instead of 7:30 PM PDT. (R7)

Online Banking
QuickBooks now takes less time to display the "Add Multiple"
transactions window. (R3)
Check transactions are now "matched" correctly when downloading
from the Online Banking Center. (R3)
QuickBooks will no longer append a random character to the end of
online payee names longer than 32 characters. (R5)
QuickBooks Pro and Premier will now allow non-Admin users to
download online payments into QuickBooks. (R7)

Time Tracker
QuickBooks will now accept Time sheets that were created in
QuickBooks 2006 Release 7 or later. (R9)

QuickBooks update will no longer crash in qbpatch.exe when
applying the product update logged in as a Windows Power User.

Improved messaging was added when customers are installing a

Convert
Transactions that include balance sheet accounts will now convert
correctly when converting Quicken data to QuickBooks format.

A QuickBooks data file that was originally converted from Quicken,
and then uses the Copy Company File for QuickBooks Mac option, will
no longer appear to have transaction damage in the Qbwin.log file.

QuickBooks will no longer cause Verify to fail permissions
analysis when selecting an A/R account during conversion from
Quicken. (R5)

Payments
A warning dialog was added for receiving payments for a customer
with more than 32 thousand outstanding invoices. (R5)
- Registration
QuickBooks will no longer display the error, "Error 3371 Could not
load License data" when registering QuickBooks Enterprise Edition
6.0 in a Terminal Services environment. (R3)
- Reports
Reports will no longer refresh multiple times after editing a
transaction that is included in the report. (R2)
Audit Trail reports will no longer display transactions as
"modified" when the transaction creation and modification
timestamps differ because of print or e-mail flags. (R3)
QuickBooks now sorts Reconciliation Detail reports by date.

- Search
Searching within Search results will no longer generate the error,
"Memory cannot be read". (R5)
- Time
Tracker
QuickBooks Time Tracker is now available. Time Tracker is a
Web-based service that enables customers to download timesheets
directly into QuickBooks. More information is available on the
QuickBooks Time Tracker Web site. (R7)
The Time Tracker service has been enhanced based on customer
feedback. The service now directs customers to a web site where the
user can choose which timesheet(s) to download. Once the selected
timesheets are downloaded, they are ready for use in QuickBooks as
if entered directly, and users no longer need to "accept for
invoicing". (R8)

Interface
QuickBooks Vendor and Customer centers will now display all items
correctly in 800 X 600 resolution when the window is resized.

Pressing any key will no longer move the highlight to the top of
the transaction list on the Transaction Pane of the Centers.

QuickBooks now has an option for users to add the
"Services" icon to the icon bar. (R7)
