Release Notes for QuickBooks Client Manager
Version 1.0, Release 3 Release 3 includes some general improvements and addresses many
problems users may have encountered when synchronizing Client
Manager with other applications, including QuickBooks and Outlook,
by improving the synchronization and providing better error handling. Program enhancements on this release General improvements - You can now edit the date for a note or call directly in the
Note window.
- Adding a new Name group and assigning this group to a name will
no longer cause the name to lose its already assigned groups.
- Client Manager will try to locate files from History shortcuts
created by one user and synchronized with other users of Client
Manager. If the file cannot be found, other users will be prompted
to locate the file.
Note: Other users will be able to search for and, if they have
access, open the file. This will only open the file; the shortcut
created by another user will not be updated.
General synchronization improvements for Client Manager, QuickBooks,
Outlook, and Outlook Express - When troubleshooting with technical support, a
new Utilities menu added to the file menu containing access to
a new Sync Log and a Reset QuickBooks sync feature
- When troubleshooting with technical support,
a new Sync Log added to improve error tracking
The sync log can be enabled and used to help troubleshoot errors
encountered when synchronizing with other applications.
- Fixed an error caused by synchronizing names or addresses that
contain extended characters (such as à,ü). These names
are now supported when synchronizing with other applications.
Additional QuickBooks synchronization improvements - Added the ability to Reset QuickBooks sync
This feature was added to help reset problems that may have occurred
because multiple users synchronized with both QuickBooks and Client
Manager or because you are working with a restored QuickBooks
company file. Use this feature with caution, and always backup
your Client Manager database. Only one Client Manager user should
synchronize with QuickBooks.
- Addressed several situations that caused sync with QuickBooks
to fail
When possible, Client Manager will display error messages pertaining
to certain records and allow sync to continue with errors. Errors
can then be resolved manually, but the synchronization will complete.
- Improved error messaging for QuickBooks synchronization
- Improved synchronizing with merged records
- Only merged records that can be supported by QuickBooks will
be merged.
- Instructions are provided to associate records that cannot
be merged.
- Incomplete 1099 vendors in QuickBooks that have been imported
into Client Manager will not be updated in future synchronizations.
Vendors that are marked as eligible for 1099 in QuickBooks but
do not contain the corresponding tax ID or social security number
information will generate an error message when synchronizing
with Client Manager. Completing this information or unchecking
eligible for 1099 in QuickBooks will resolve this error.
- Working with QuickBooks and Client Manager:
- When synchronizing with multiple users of Client Manager,
only one Client Manager user should synchronize with QuickBooks.
- Only the Client Manager user who synchronizes with QuickBooks
can use shortcuts to view QuickBooks transactions.
Additional Microsoft Outlook synchronization improvements - Addressed certain problems when synchronizing with Outlook,
including:
- Performance synchronizing with Outlook was improved. An
intermittent problem with Client Manager using too much
memory to synchronize with Outlook has been addressed.
- Email addresses added to contacts in Outlook will now be
included when synchronized with Client Manager.
- You can now use the ' character in an Outlook contact and
import successfully into Client Manager.
Known limitations with this release - Adding a spouse to an Outlook contact will not synchronize with
Client Manager
If you add a spouse to an Outlook contact after your initial synchronization
with Client Manager, the spouse will not be added when you synchronize
with Client Manager.
Spouses added to contacts before your initial import from Outlook
into Client Manager will appear in Client Manager. - Address field in Client Manager fills in the In Care Of field
in a Lacerte 1040 tax return
Information stored in the address field for a name in Client Manager
will appear in the In Care Of field when a Lacerte 1040 tax return
is created or updated for the name.
Release Notes for QuickBooks Client Manager Version 1.0, Release
2b Release 2.0b makes a change to the feature in Client Manager that
sends information to Intuit when the program encounters a problem
and needs to close. This change provides for more information to
be sent to Intuit to allow us to better understand and resolve the
problem, which will make the product more stable for you. You will continue to be asked whether or not you want to send any
information to Intuit when the program encounters a problem and
needs to close and the process will continue to be private and fast.
And, as before, the error report does not contain any personal information
about you or any data from your QuickBooks Client Manager database
file. Release Notes for QuickBooks Client Manager Version 1.0, Release
2
This document describes program enhancements included on QuickBooks
Client Manager version 1.0, release 2. Also included is a list of
known issues that you may encounter. Please review these issues
so that you can be aware of them and avoid them.
If you encounter additional issues as you use Client Manager, please
report them by clicking on the Help menu, then choosing Report a
Bug. Many of these issues will be fixed in upcoming product updates.
Program enhancements on this release New Products Supported We have added the following to Client Manager's list of supported
programs. These are available for both import and synchronization
functions:
- 2003 Microsoft Outlook
- 2003 Lacerte Tax program
- 2003 ProSeries Tax program
- 2004 QuickBooks
New Import Options
You can now import 2003 Lacerte appointments and To Do's into Client
Manager. This is optional, and can only be done upon import. Synchronization
is not an option for these items at this time.
The New "Tax Toolbar" A new Tax Toolbar has been added to the Client Manager contact
profile dashboard that allows you to do the following from within
Client Manager:
- Create or update a 2003 tax return in Lacerte or ProSeries.
- Check the status of an existing 2003 Lacerte or ProSeries tax
return or e-file.
- Check the status of an existing 2003 ProSeries Bank Product.
- Display all client notes for the selected 2003 Lacerte Tax client.
New Address Options You can now choose to populate a 2003 Lacerte or ProSeries tax
return or Form 8822 with contact information from Client Manager.
This option is available in the Create/Update Tax Return
link on the new Tax Toolbar, or upon synchronization with
the 2003 Lacerte or ProSeries Tax program. Improvements to Recent History - If you print a tax return to PDF in your 2003 Lacerte or ProSeries
Tax program, a link to the PDF is automatically added to the Recent
History in Client Manager.
- Links to tax returns created in the 2003 Lacerte or ProSeries
Tax program are automatically updated in Client Manager upon synchronization.
- Clicking Send e-mail in the Name Profile will
now add a link to the Recent History.
- Any Recent History links to Lacerte or ProSeries tax return
files that are re-named or deleted are automatically updated in
real-time, as long as you have Client Manager open.
Enhanced Functionality When Adding Contacts When you add a new contact in Client Manager, please note that
it will not be added to an external application automatically. However,
if you want to add the contact to QuickBooks, you can check the
Add to QuickBooks during next sync checkbox (located in the
lower right-hand corner of the contact profile dashboard), and the
new contact will be added to QuickBooks upon synchronization. If you want to add a new contact to the 2003 Lacerte or ProSeries
Tax program, use the Create/Update Tax Return link on the
new Tax Toolbar, which is located on the contact profile
dashboard. Other Enhancements We have improved Client Manager's ability to handle errors during
the synchronization process with Outlook and QuickBooks products.
Instead of abandoning the synchronization, now Client Manager can
usually finish your current synchronization even when an error occurs. Issues that you may encounter Installation Issues Note: You cannot install Client Manager on a network drive.
You must install Client Manager on a local drive. - Windows NT is not supported. Installation will fail if you attempt
to install Client Manager on Windows NT.
- A confusing situation can occur during custom installation of
Client Manager: If you browse to your Network Neighborhood and
select a drive but not a folder name, then the installation directory
is created locally, but it can look as though it is remote.
Note: QuickBooks Client Manager does get installed locally,
so the problem is one of appearance only.
- In rare instances, installing Client Manager results in odd
behavior in various Microsoft Office programs. If you encounter
unusual behaviors such as Microsoft Excel requesting a CD to install
components, or the spellchecker in Microsoft Outlook malfunctioning,
reboot your system to resolve the problem.
QuickBooks Synchronization Issues Note: Client Manager's QuickBooks integration features require
(at a minimum) QuickBooks 2003 Release R7P. - If you install QuickBooks 2003 AFTER installing QuickBooks 2004,
much of the improved QuickBooks import and synchronization functionality
will not work. If you must install QuickBooks 2003 after installing
QuickBooks 2004, uninstall QuickBooks 2004 first, then install
QuickBooks 2003 and reinstall QuickBooks 2004 again.
- If you are using QuickBooks, note that the relevant company
file must be open in order to import, synchronize, work with QuickReports,
or work with transactions.
- If you receive an internal error from QuickBooks during your
initial import or synchronization or when you work with QuickBooks
transactions, the problem could be a QuickBooks dialog, such as
the Update QuickBooks dialog, that is open but hidden in the background.
To expose the dialog, Press Alt+Tab to bring up the application
icons. Then, holding down the Alt key, Tab over to the
QuickBooks icon. This action will bring QuickBooks forward, allowing
you to dismiss the open dialog.
- Problems can occur during QuickBooks synchronization if you
attempt to merge a 1099 vendor with a non-1099 vendor. To work
around this problem, specify both records in QuickBooks as 1099
vendors (even if you do not supply a specific number in the 1099
field). As long as both vendors are of the same type, they can
be merged successfully.
Microsoft Outlook Calendar Integration Issues - To automatically update appointments in Client Manager upon
synchronization with Outlook, you must use the Outlook calendar
as your default calendar. To do so, in Client Manager, click Edit...Preferences.
On the Calendar tab, choose Outlook Calendar, then
click OK.
- If you use Microsoft Outlook as your default calendar and you
create a new appointment, Client Manager automatically adds the
appointment to the Homepage as well as to the Name Record
screen (in cases where the appointment is created from the Name
Record screen). However, you cannot associate the appointment
with a particular project. To work around this issue, drag and
drop the Outlook appointment directly onto the relevant Project
record screen. This action causes a confirmation dialog to appear,
which allows you to select a project. Note that the appointment
might then appear twice on the Homepage, once as it relates to
a name, and again as it relates to a project.
- Microsoft Outlook appointments that are updated, such as with
a date or time change, by the meeting organizer and accepted by
you cannot be dragged and dropped into Client Manager.
Note: If you use the Microsoft Outlook calendar, all your
Outlook appointments will be shared during Client Manager-to-Client
Manager synchronization.
- To avoid sharing Outlook appointments, disable all history items
by choosing Export/Sync from the File menu, then
choosing Sync data.
- In the Sync Data: Import and Export panel, check the
Client Manager checkbox, then click Settings.
- In the Client Manager Sync panel, create a depot, click
Next.
- In the Create New Sync Depot panel, clear the Include
Name/Project History checkbox under Sync Depot Options,
and then click Finish.
Other Outlook Integration Issues Outlook notes and tasks can be imported into Client Manager, but
synchronization is not an option for these items at this time.
General Issues Pressing Ctrl+J does not display the QuickBooks Customer
Job List. This issue is likely to be fixed in an update release. Release Notes for QuickBooks Client Manager Version 1.0, Release
