Warning: An improper transaction was found while running this report.

While running a Sales Tax Liability Report (STLR), you receive this pop-up:

Warning: An improper transaction was found while running this report. Therefore your sales tax report may not show correct numbers.

Why this is happening

There may be damaged transactions in the company file.

How to fix it

Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1
Run the Rebuild Data utility to try to repair the damaged transaction(s).

Solution 2
Look at the QBWIN.LOG to identify damaged transactions to be manually deleted and re-created.

  1. Press Ctrl+1. From the Product Information window, press Ctrl+2 to open the Tech Help application.
  2. Click the Open File tab found at the top of the Tech Help screen.
  3. Select the QBWIN.LOG file from the list on the left and click the Open File button at the right side of the window.
  4. When Notepad opens, you will see the QBWIN.LOG file. Scroll to the very bottom of the file.
  5. Press Ctrl+F to open a Search window. Click the Up radio button in the direction area, and type BEGIN VERIFY LOG in the search window.
  6. Look for any error messages listed between Begin Verify Log and End Verify Log. The document number of the corrupted transaction will be listed with the error message.
  7. Find the referenced transaction in the company file and note the details necessary to re-create it.
  8. Delete the transaction and re-enter it. Click Save & Close.

When all damaged transactions have been deleted and re-entered, run the Verify Data utility again to ensure that the file is no longer corrupted.
If the company file contains several corrupted transactions, they must be re-created one at a time. This can be a long process to correct.
