Unable to select - Use My Existing Payroll Service, when manual payroll is turned on

When a company file has manual payroll option turned on, the Payroll selection under the Employees menu will be missing. As a result, the option Use My Existing Payroll Service is not available in order to add the file to a QuickBooks payroll subscription.

Why this is happening

After turning on manual payroll, all of the options for subscription based QuickBooks payroll are removed. 

How to fix it

In order to bring back Payroll menu options:

  1. Select Edit > Preferences from the top menu bar.
  2. Choose Payroll & Employees > Company preferences.
  3. Choose No payroll under QuickBooks payroll features.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Now when choosing the Employee menu, the option for Payroll is available.
  6. If payroll has been activated on this installation of QuickBooks, then the option Use My Existing Payroll Service should now appear.
