QuickBooks cannot find a change file that corresponds to this company file

When trying to import Accountant's Changes, you received this error:

QuickBooks cannot find a change file that corresponds to this company file.

Why this is happening

The Accountants Copy File Transfer Service does not see a matching file waiting for download for one of the following reasons:

  • Either the accountant's or the client's install of QuickBooks is not on the latest release.
  • Compatibility issues with Internet Explorer 9 & 10.
  • The wrong company file is open.  This includes a backup restored which did not have the same changes restrictions, or has had the Restrictions Removed.
  • The Accountant's Changes have expired in the Transfer Service.
  • The Accountant has not sent back the changes file through the Accountants Copy File Transfer Service.
How to fix it

Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1:  Update the Accountants and the clients QuickBooks to the latest release

Solution 2:   Check the version of Internet Explorer. Currently, only QuickBooks 2013 and 2014 versions are compatible with Internet Explorer 10, and they must be on the latest release. For all other QuickBooks versions, a downgrade to Internet Explorer 9.0 might be necessary. For more information see Comparability with Internet Explorer 9 & 10

Solution 3:  Ensure the correct file and correct version of the file are open, and retry the import from File > Accountant's Copy > Import Accountant's Changes from Web.

Solution 4:  Request that the Accountant send the changes through the transfer service again then re-import through File > Accountant's Copy > Import Accountant's Changes from Web.

Solution 5:  If the changes were not sent through the Accountants Copy File Transfer Service, or are unable to be retrieved this way:

  1. Have the Accountant send the changes file through File > Accountant's Copy > View/Export Changes for Client.
  2. Save the changes file to a known location.
  3. Send transfer file to the client either via email, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), or flash drive.
  4. The client can then import through File > Accountant's Copy > Import Accountant's Changes from File.
