Reinstalling QuickBooks out of chronological order causes file loss or inability to open

Installing multiple years of QuickBooks Desktop out of chronological order causes the Previously Opened File menu to be blank. Browsing to the file previously opened in that newer year version may return an error that it was last opened in Enterprise Solutions and cannot be opened in QuickBooks Premier. Trying to open that file in Enterprise, prompts you with the warning to make a backup before upgrading the file to Enterprise and that it cannot be opened in previous version.

How to fix it

 Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1

  1. Repair the current year version of Quickbooks.
  2. Reboot the computer.
  3. The current year product should now have the previously opened files listed and no message that they have been upgraded to Enterprise Solutions.

Solution 2

  1. Perform a clean uninstall of all versions of QuickBooks.
  2. Reinstall all versions of QuickBooks in chronological order.
