Warning: invalid password when attempting to access the set up users list

When attempting to access the Setup Users list window, you see a QuickBooks Desktop Login window prompting you to enter the admin (owner) password. Once you enter the admin password (or hit OK if you do not have an admin password), you receive the message:

Warning: Invalid password, and you are unable to access the user list.

How to fix it

Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1: Disable Hosting

If you are on a workstation or stand alone computer, you can turn off Hosting Mode and try to access the Set Up Users list.

  1. Go to the File menu and choose Utilities.
    • If you see Stop Hosting Multi User Access, click it to turn hosting off.
    • If you see Host Multi User Access, then hosting is already off. Proceed to solution 2 instead.

If you are on the server (or computer hosting QuickBooks), you can turn off hosting to gain access to the Set Up Users window. Keep in mind you will need to have other users log out while you are in the Set Up users window.

  1. Go to the File menu and choose Utilities
    • If you see Stop Hosting Multi User Access, click it to turn hosting off.
    • If you see Host Multi User Access, then hosting is already off. Proceed to solution 2 instead.
  2. Once hosting is off on the server, try to access the Set Up Users window.
  3. When you are finished working in the Set Up users window, you will need to turn hosting back on so that other users can access QuickBooks.
  4. Go to the File menu and choose Utilities.
  5. Choose Host Multi User Access to turn Hosting back on.

Solution 2: Create and Restore Portable Copy of company file

  1. Please click here for instructions on creating and restoring a portable copy of your company file.
  2. If the file created from the restored portable works, you can use this copy of your company file going forward

Solution 3: Test in Safe Mode and contact AVG Support

This issue can be caused by using AVG Anti-Virus/Internet Security

You can confirm if this is the case by rebooting your computer in Safe Mode with Networking. If the issue does not occur, then you will need to work with your IT professional or AVG support.
