Opening a file in secondary window closes the file in the primary window of QuickBooks

When a secondary file is opened in QuickBooks 2012 and QuickBooks 2013, the primary window closes the file that was already open.

Why this is happening

We have seen this situation occur on some systems that have both ProSeries and QuickBooks installed on them.

How to fix it

Rename the QBSEVNTXXR.EXE file.

  1. Close all open QuickBooks windows.
  2. Click the Windows Start button.
  3. Select My Computer or Computer (depending on your operating system).
  4. Display hidden folders on the hard drive:
    • Windows 7 and Vista
      1. Click the Organize at the top-left.
      2. Select Folder and search options.
      3. Select the View Tab.
      4. Look in the list of Advanced Settings and select Show hidden files and folders.
      5. Click OK.
    • Windows 10 and 8
      1. Click the View tab.
      2. Select the Hidden items to show all hidden files and folders.
  5. Browse to the C:/ drive.
  6. Select the year of ProSeries you installed or uninstalled.
  7. Browse to your ProSeries folder (for example, ProWin11).
  8. Double-click the 32bit folder.
  9. Look for an file called QBPSEVNTXXR.EXE.
  10. Right-click the file and click Rename.
  11. Call it QBPSEVNTXXR.EXE.old and press Enter.
  12. Re-open your QuickBooks windows.

Note:  XX represents the year of ProSeries you have on your machine.
