Error -6123, 0 when restoring a backup file

You may see the following error while restoring a backup from a flash drive, or other removal storage device, to a local computer:  (-6123, 0).

Important: If you are getting this error when opening your company file or working in QuickBooks Desktop, please see this article instead of this one.

Why is this happening

This issue can occur for the following reasons:

  • You are restoring a backup directly from a flash drive or other removable storage device to the local hard drive.
  • The company file has data damage.
How to fix it

Intuit recommends 4 solutions for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try them all. For best results, perform the solutions in order.

Solution 1: Update QuickBooks to the latest release.
Note: QuickBooks is often updated after it is first released to fix common issues. These release updates are free and easy to download.

Solution 2: Copy the file from removable storage device to your computer before restoring your backup
  1. Copy the .QBB (backup) file from the removable storage unit to your computer's desktop.
  2. Open QuickBooks.
  3. From the QuickBooks File menu, choose Open or Restore Company.
  4. Browse to the local desktop, and chose the backup file.
  5. Click Open.
  6. In the Restore Company To: window, browse to the local desktop and click Save.
  7. Important: This restores your backup on your local computer, rather than a network location. Once the file restores successfully, you may then copy the company file (.QBW) from the local desktop to the desired network location.
Solution 3: Run rebuild and verify on the original file, then create a new backup
  1. Open the original file the backup was created from.
  2. Go to File>Utilities>Rebuild Data
  3. After the rebuild is complete, go to File>Utilities>Verify Data.
    1. If the verify comes back with the message "No issues detected", proceed to step 5.
    2. If the file fails the verification, please see Troubleshooting Data Damage for additional assistance.
  4. Choose local backup.
  5. Save the backup to the desktop.
  6. After the backup is created, move the backup to the removable storage unit.  Once you have the file on the removable storage unit, repeat the steps from Solution 2.  If the error still occurs, continue to Solution 4.
Solution 4: Create a portable company file from the original file
  1. Open the original file the backup was created from.
  2. Go to File>Create copy.
  3. Select Portable company file.
  4. Save the portable file to the desktop.
  5. After the portable company file is created, move it to the removable storage unit.  Once you have the file on the removable storage unit, repeat the steps from Solution 2 selecting Restore a portable file instead of the backup file option.
