Opening primary company file brings up Secondary Company file screen

When trying to open company file, it brings up Secondary Company file screen even if there is no QuickBooks Primary Screen open.

Why this is happening

QuickBooks Desktop thinks that a company file is already open in a Primary QuickBooks window so it opens the selected file as the Secondary company file.

How to fix it

1. Open Task Manager on your computer

  1. Press Control  + Alt + Delete
  2. Click on Task Manager
  3. Click on the Processes Tab
  4. Click on the column heading labeled Image Name (This will put the programs in Alphabetic order.)
  5. Search for QBW32.EXE
  6. Highlight QBW32.EXE
  7. Click on End Process at the bottom
  8. If there are multiple QBW32.exe files running, End Process on all of them

2. Open QuickBooks

3. Open Company file.  The company file will open without going to a second instance of QuickBooks.

Quick Tip: This will also occur if they have another "flavor" of quickbooks open in the same year...example: ES14 is running and they launch Premier Accountant 2014. The Premier will launch as a secondary. In this instance close the other same year product..
