Error: -6103, 0, when opening your company file or while switching to multi-user mode

When you open or use your QuickBooks Desktop company file over a network, you see the error:

-6103,0

Why this is happening

This error can occur if:

  • A network connection with the host computer is disrupted.
  • Firewall settings prevent QuickBooks Desktop files from accessing the necessary ports.
  • Multiple instances of QuickBooks database service are running.
  • QuickBooks Desktop data or program files are damaged.
How to fix it

Download, install and run the QuickBooks File Doctor.

Advanced troubleshooting steps

If you are unable to download and use the QuickBooks File Doctor or if your issue continues to occur, please try these advanced troubleshooting steps.

Before attempting the following troubleshooting procedures:

  • Restart (reboot) the computer. This closes any programs that might be in conflict, reloads the operating system, and reestablishes network connections.
  • If yours is a single-user installation of QuickBooks Desktop, stop multi-user hosting if it is turned on (From the File menu, choose utilities and click Stop Hosting Multi User Access).

If the error still occurs, select the option below that best fits your situation. For example, if you recently installed or updated firewall or antivirus software, you could start by checking the firewall settings. If you are not sure where to begin, step through each solution in order until the issue resolved
