Error -6174, 0, when the user attempts to stop hosting in QuickBooks.

When the user attempts to turn hosting on or off within QuickBooks, they receive an error message:

Problem: Quickbooks cannot change the multi-user hosting mode on this computer because other QuickBooks users are logged into Windows Via Fast User Switching.

Ask the other users logged into this machine to temporarily close QuickBooks.  Then, try again.(-6174, 0)

Why is this happening

This issue can occur, due to the following:

  • A previous Windows user was never logged out of the workstation.  Instead, the user(s) opted to use the Switch User feature to log in as a new user, without logging out the old user.
  • There is a confilct with one of the Intuit created users.
How to fix it

Important: Prior to performing any of the following steps, ensure that all workstations are logged out of QuickBooks files.

  1. Close all programs and restart the computer.
  2. Once the computer has been restarted, open QuickBooks.
  3. Go to the File menu, select Utilities, and choose Stop Hosting Multi-user Access.
    • If you do not get the error message, then it was caused by another user being logged into the machine.
    • If you do get the message, close the error message and proceed to step 4.
  4. Close QuickBooks.
  5. Hold Ctrl + Alt + Delete, to open the Task Manager.
  6. Click on the Processes tab.
  7. Click on the Image Name header, to sort the processes in alphabetical order.
  8. Scroll down to the Q's and end the following processes (if found):
    • QBW32.exe
    • QBHelp.exe
    • QBUpdate.exe
    • QBPOSDBService.exe (Important: Prior to ending this process, make sure that QuickBooks Point of Sale is closed on all workstations)
  9. Close the Task Manager.
  10. Open QuickBooks.
  11. Open the File menu, select Utilities, and click on Stop Hosting Multi-user access.  This should now allow you to switch the hosting.

Note:  Once you restart the computer, the QBPOSDBService.exe will restart.
