When entering a license number, spaces are skipped and the number is reported as invalid

When you are installing QuickBooks Desktop and are prompted to input the license number and product code, the cursor for the numeric input jumps fields, skipping input spaces. As a result, you cannot enter the entire license number and the install fails.

How to fix it

Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.             

Solution 1: Clear out all fields starting with the last field

  1. Click into the second field of the product number.
  2. Hold down the Backspace key on the keyboard until all numbers and fields have been completely cleared out.
  3. Tap the Backspace key a few more times to ensure any hidden characters have been removed from the boxes.
  4. Enter the license and product number again.

Solution 2: Copy and paste from Notepad

Ensure that the keyboard NumLock function is enabled. If the numeric keypad is malfunctioning, try to use the upper row of numeric keys instead.

If the issue persists, proceed by copying and pasting from Notepad. (NOTE: If you are using 2015 and later, you can copy and paste from any source without worrying about spaces or dashes.)

  1. Open Notepad
    1. Click the Windows Start button and select All Programs.
    2. Open the Accessories folder and select Notepad from the list.
  2. In Notepad, enter your license and product numbers as follows (including spaces):

    [License] xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx xxx

    [product Number] xxx xxx

  3. Copy each grouping of numbers and paste them into the corresponding boxes on the QuickBooks installation screen.
