Error: you cannot change the type of an account that is associated with a 1099 category

When trying to change the type of an account, the following error message appears:

You cannot change the type of an account that is associated with a 1099 category. To change the type of this account, you must first delete its association in the 1099 Preferences.
Why this is happening

The account that you are attempting to change is a 1099 account.

How to Fix it

 

  1. From the Vendor menu, choose Print/E-File 1099s and click 1099 Wizard.
  2. Click Get Started and click Continue until you get to Map vendor payment accounts.
  3. Locate the account under the Account used for 1099 column and change the box to Omit these payments from 1099 under the Apply payments to this 1099 box column.
  4. Click Save & Close
