Error: The File is in Use.... when opening a company file on a standalone workstation

When opening a company file on a standalone workstation, or on a networked computer when no other users are logged in, the message "the file is in use" appears.

How to fix it
Turn off Hosting:
    1. From the File menu, select Utilities.
    2. If you see the option to Stop Hosting Multi-User Access click on this.
    3. Follow the prompts to turn off the hosting service.
    4. If this not resolve the issue try renaming the .tlg file.
Rename the .tlg file and open the file:
    1. With the Control key held, double-click the QuickBooks icon.
    2. Keep the Control key held until QuickBooks opens to the No Company Open screen.
    3. From the File menu select Open Previous Company to view the location of the data file.
    4. Browse to this location through Windows and locate the file with the same company name, and a .tlg file extension.
    5. If no extension appears, turn on extensions in windows. To do this follow the steps at the end of this article.
    6. Right-click the .tlg file and select Rename.
    7. Replace the tlg extension with old and click enter to save the change.
Once you have opened the file, check for and repair data damage.
Editing file extensions:
In Windows, file extensions do not show by default and must be turned on to be edited. To do this follow the proceeding steps for your operating system:

Windows 8:

  1. Right-click the Windows Logo (Start) button and choose File Explorer. 
  2. Click the View tab and put a check mark in the box next to File Name Extensions. 
  3. Close this window.

 Windows Vista/Windows 7:

  1. Right-click the Windows Start button and choose Explore.
  2. Click Organize and select Folder and Search Options.
  3. Click the View tab and clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box.  
  4. Close this window.
