File received via e-mail has an extension of .dat

A file (QuickBooks company file, backup, portable file, accountant's copy or other file) received as an attachment in an e-mail has a file extension of .dat.

How to fix it
This is most likely an issue with the e-mail program/provider used to send or receive the e-mail. Some e-mail will change the file properties of an attachment and cause the .dat file extension to appear at the end of a file name.
Attempt to add change the .dat extension to the proper file extension and use the file as usual. For example, if the file is a backup, change .dat to .qbb and attempt to restore the backup.
If this does not resolve the issue, have the sender compress the file and e-mail it. If the sender cannot compress the file, have them e-mail the file again to see if it was a one-time issue that caused the .dat to appear on the file.
If the issue persists, have them send the file using a completely different method (like a cd or usb drive).
