Error: PDF Activation Error -30 or -40, when saving as .pdf in QuickBooks or Intuit Statement Writer

When you try to save as a .pdf file in QuickBooks or Intuit Statement Writer you see the following message:
Activation Error -30 or -40
Why this is happening

Typically, this issue occurs when another PDF program overwrites the QuickBooks PDF driver.

QuickBooks uses a PDF driver from Amyuni Technologies, which also provides PDF drivers for a variety of other vendors' software.

How to fix it
Solution: Run the PDF Diagnostic Tool and update QuickBooks
  1. Follow the instructions in Unable to reconcile accounts or to create, print, or email .pdf files to download and run the PDF Diagnostic Tool.
  2. When you run the tool, a folder called QB_ADV_PDF_delete_after_call is placed on your desktop. Inside this folder is a tool called QB_Amyuni_DLL_Fix.exe. Double-click this file to run the tool and fix the mismatch between the drivers.

Note: Fixing the QuickBooks PDF converter may break the PDF functionality of the third-party program that the driver was set to use. Typically, the third-party application will continue to work because the QuickBooks drivers should work for third-party programs, but if you notice that other applications begin to have PDF issues, this may be the cause.

If this solution does not resolve the issue, you can read discussions and post messages and questions relating to your issue on the Intuit QuickBooks Community site for free, or you can contact a technical support agent for additional guidance. Fees may apply.
