Contact Sync Error: There was an error connecting to QuickBooks Desktop

When attempting to start QuickBooks Contact Sync from within Microsoft(r) Outlook and the Canadian version of QuickBooks Desktop is installed and running, the following message appears:

Contact Sync Error: There was an error connecting to QuickBooks. Contact Sync was unable to establish a connection to QuickBooks. Try restarting QuickBooks Desktop and Outlook and try again.
The Canadian version of QuickBooks Desktop is not compatible with QuickBooks Contact Sync.
How to fix it
Intuit is aware of this issue. There is no resolution at this time. Should this status change, additional information will be made available on this Web site.

How to tell if you are running the Canadian Version of QuickBooks Desktop:

  1. Click on Help > About QuickBooks
  2. Look at the copyright information at the bottom of the screen if it is a Canadian version it will start with yyyy "Intuit Canada" where yyyy is the year of the copyright.

If you are getting the error with the US Version of QuickBooks:

  1. Click on Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs
  2. Click on QuickBooks Contact Sync and uninstall the program.
  3. Go to http://www.quickbooks.com/contact_sync
  4. Click the Download Now button and save the file to the local computer.
  5. Reinstall the QuickBooks Contact Sync.
