Cannot import, not enough disk space or too many records exist, stops an IIF import

When you are importing an IIF file, the following message(s) appear:

  • Unrecoverable error: QuickBooks has experienced an error and must be shut down. 14667 90004.
  • Warning: Unable to add item to list.
  • Error: Cannot Import. Not enough disc space.
  • Too many records exist.

The import terminates, and the program may shut down.

Why this is happening

These messages can appear when your IIF contains list elements and  one or more lists  has reached its limit(s).

This may occur when:

  1. You are importing list elements that push a list to its limit. If you have 12,000 names in your file, and the IIF contains 3,000 names, the import will fail.
  2. If transactions contain items, names or accounts that are not setup in QuickBooks Desktop, the import functionality will add them to the list. When the list reaches its limit, errors occur.
How to fix it
  1. To determine which list has reached its limit, start QuickBooksDesktop, open your company file and press F2 (or CTRL + 1).
  2. Compare the list numbers at the bottom right with the list limits in list limitations of QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Manage your data file to resolve performance issues contains measures you can take to reduce your list sizes.
