Error: Run Time Error 3197 Data has changed. Operation stopped or Run Time Error 3040 disk I/O error during read when starting the QuickBooks Timer

One of the following errors occurs when starting the QuickBooks Pro Timer:

  • Run Time Error 3197 Data has changed. Operation stopped
  • Run Time Error 3040 disk I/O error during read.

The Pro Timer data file may be damaged.

Solution description
  1. Select the QuickBooks Timer File and select Back Up Timer File to back up the Timer data file.
    Note:
If you are unable to do this, copy the data file and then rename the copy BACKUP.TDB (or a similar, descriptive name with a .TDB extension).
  2. Restart the Timer. If the Timer will not start, move the damaged Timer file (it will have a .TDB extension) out of the QBTIMER folder.
  3. Start the Timer again and open the sample data file (if necessary, select the File menu and select Open Timer File. Select the file name sample.tdb).
  4. Move the damaged Timer file back into the QBTIMER folder.
  5. Select the File menu and select Rebuild Timer File. Select the damaged (not the sample) data file. Follow the on-screen directions to rebuild your data file.
  6. Open your rebuilt data file to make sure it looks and works properly. If data seems to be missing, repeat Step 5.

Important: Intuit is unable to recover data for damaged Timer files. If you continue to get the error message after following the above steps, start a new timer file by choosing New Timer File from the File menu.
