Error -6150, -1004: An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to create, open or use the company file

When attempting to open a company file or restore a backup, the following error message is displayed:

Error -6150, -1004. An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to create, open or use the company file.

How to fix it

This company file may be damaged, but the steps below should be followed to make a definite determination:

  1. Ensure that QuickBooks Dsktop is at the latest release.
  2. Ensure that the company file or backup is being opened or restored correctly. See in-product QuickBooks Help for specific instructions on how to open and restore files.
  3. Ensure that the proper version of QuickBooks Desktop is being used to open or restore the company file (for example, if the file was created in Enterprise Solutions, it cannot be opened or restored in QuickBooks Premier or Pro - also, if the file was created in a later version of QuickBooks Desktop [like 2015], it cannot be opened or restored in an earlier version of QuickBooks [like 2014] unless you are working with an Accountant's Copy).
  4. Copy the company file to the Desktop.
  5. Rename the file to a short, single word (for example, if the file appears as Company Name.qbb, change the name to Comp.qbb - if file extensions are off on this computer, the file extension [.qbb] will not be visible).
  6. If the issue persists, open a sample company file.
  7. If a sample company file opens successfully and you were attempting to open a company file (.qbw), proceed to Step 10.
  8. If you were attempting to restore a backup or portable file, make a backup and restore it or create a portable file and restore it from the sample company file you are in.
  9. If the sample file is restored successfully, proceed to Step 10. If the sample file is not restored, proceed to Step 12.
  10. Have the person who sent the original file use another media to send the file again (for example, if this file was emailed, have the file sent again by cd, flash drive or emailed through another email account).
  11. Attempt to restore the new file.
  12. If the issue persists, check for and repair data damage.
  13. If the steps above have not resolved the issue, try to restore the file as you complete each step below. If a step does not resolve the issue, continue with the next step and try to restore the file again until you are successful.
  14. Run reboot.bat
  15. Repair QuickBooks.
  16. Perform a clean installation of QuickBooks.
  17. Create a new Windows Admin user called Test (see instructions at Microsoft Help & Support site), login as this user and then try to restore the file.
