Sales Tax Liability Report (STLR) shows Other line

You run a Sales Tax Liability Report and you see Other line as in the screenshot below:

Why this is happening
  • You have used Write Checks instead of Pay Sales Tax option when you made a payment against your sales tax payable.
  • You have made sales tax adjustment for the vendor and it is not linked to a specific sales tax item.
  • You have created a Journal Entry to manually adjust sales tax payable and it is not linked to a specific sales tax item.
Solution description

To avoid this issue, do NOT use Write Check option when paying Sales tax. Always go to Vendor > Sales Tax > Pay Sales tax when making payment against your sales tax liability.

You also need to make sure all adjustments are linked to an item by creating a zero dollar sales tax payment.

  1. From the Vendors menu, select Sales Tax then click Pay Sales Tax.
  2. Make sure the Show sales tax due through field has the appropriate date.
  3. Put a checkmark on sales tax due and the adjustment entered.
  4. Enter the amount taking note of the following.
    • If the amount of adjustment is equal to the sales tax amount due (both are $15):
Leave the amounts in the Amt Paid column as they are. The two amounts should simply negate one another. Note that the total amount paid is zero.

    • If the amount of adjustment ($25) is greater than the sales tax amount due ($15):
Reduce the sales tax adjustment by the sales tax amount due ($25-15). The total amount paid is zero. The remaining adjustment amount ($10) should still be available as a credit and will still appear as Other in the SLTR. Note that it is displayed as a negative amount.insi

    • If the amount of adjustment ($10) is less than the sales tax amount due ($15):
Apply the adjustment to the sales tax due. The total amount should still be zero unless you decide to pay the remaining balance ($5) not covered by the adjustment.

  5. Click Ok.
