You cannot change the level, delete or merge a 1099 account

When trying to change the level, merge or delete an account in QuickBooks Desktop, one of these messages appear:

You cannot Delete or Merge an Account that is Setup as a 1099 Account. To Edit 1099 Accounts, Choose Preferences From the Edit Menu and Select Tax: 1099 from the list.
 
You cannot change the type of an account that is associated with a 1099 category. To change the type of this account, you must first delete its association in the 1099 Preferences.
Why this is happening

The account you are trying to change is a 1099 account.

How to fix it

To fix the problem, you need to remove account mapping.

  1. From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. On the left pane, select Tax:1099 then go to the Company Preferences tab.
  3. Click the link click here next to If you want to map your accounts to boxes on Form 1099-Misc.
  4. On Map vendor payment accounts window, look for the account(s) you need to update and select Omit these payments from 1099.
  5. Repeat Step d for each account to remove the mapping.
  6. Click Save & Close.
