Message: The password you typed is incorrect, when you upgrade your company data to a new version

When upgrading your company data file, this message appears:

The password you typed is incorrect.

Why is this happening

This can be caused by one of the following:

  • The Admin user for the company file was set up with a password prior to upgrading to your current version of QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Your QuickBooks Desktop company data file is damaged.
How to fix it

If the Admin user was set up with a password:

  1. If the prior version is not installed, you will need to reinstall your prior version of QuickBooks to a new folder.
  2. Restore a backup for use with an earlier QuickBooks version
  3. Use the steps in Troubleshooting QuickBooks passwords to troubleshoot the password in the prior version.
  4. If all troubleshooting steps fail, go to the QuickBooks Automated Password Removal Service site to remove the password.

If file is damaged:

  1. If the prior version is not installed, you will need to reinstall your prior version of QuickBooks to a new folder.
  2. Restore a backup for use with an earlier QuickBooks version
  3. Use standard data damage troubleshooting.
  4. Upgrade your company file again to the  new version of QuickBooks.
