Warning: The file name you entered is too long or is not valid, when you restore a backup

When attempting to restore a QuickBooks Backup, you may see an error:

The file name you entered is too long or is not valid.

How to fix it

This may be caused by more than one possibility.  Choose the appropriate method below according to your situation.

If the error is generated after choosing a QuickBooks Backup file:

  • The QuickBooks Backup file may be corrupt.  Attempt to acquire a new copy or re download from the original source.
  • Illegal characters may be present in the Backup file name.  Rename the file to a simple name like Test.qbb.

Attempt to Restore the company file again.

If the error is generated before choosing a QuickBooks Backup file:

  1. Close any open Errors or Windows within QuickBooks.
  2. Within a Company File, choose File>Save a Copy or Backup.
  3. Choose Backup copy.
  4. Choose Local backup.
  5. If prompted choose Save it now.
  6. Choose a different folder from the one last used to restore a backup file, like Desktop or My Documents.
  7. Click Save.
  8. When done, attempt to Restore the original Backup file that was failing, again.
