QuickBooks Statement Writer (QSW): Balance sheet shows a dollar amount in statement

When running a balance sheet in the Quick Books Statement Writer (QSW)*, there is a line at the bottom which says Statement Out of Balance.  If accounts that have a balance are marked inactive in QuickBooks, this amount will be excluded from the totals, putting the balance sheet out of balance.

*  QuickBooks Statement Writer (QSW) was referred to as Intuit Statement Writer (ISW) in earlier versions of Quickbooks.
How to fix it

Reactivate inactive accounts with balances:

  1. Close the QuickBooks Statement Writer.
  2. From the Lists menu, select Chart of Accounts.
  3. At the bottom of the list, put a checkmark in the box that says Include Inactive.
  4. Reactivate any accounts that display a balance.
    1. Right click the account in question.
    2. Select Make Account Active.
  5. Open the Balance sheet in QuickBooks Statement Writer. The inactive accounts will now show on the Balance Sheet.
