Error: "An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to access the company file. Try again.

A -9, 0 error occurs when trying to open a backup company file created with QuickBooks for Macintosh (Mac):

An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to access the company file. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact Intuit Technical Support and provide them with the following error codes: (-9,0) 

This issue occurs when using QuickBooks Desktop 2014 or later to open a "backup for Windows" file created with QuickBooks Mac 2014 or later and can be caused by either of the following:

  • Corrupted audit trail data in the Mac file.
  • Special characters in the Memo field of a transaction.
How to fix it

To resolve this issue, select an option below:

Note: If this file is being submitted to an accountant for review only, the following steps can also be performed on a copy of the company file.

If you have a corrupted audit trail in the Mac file:

  1. On the Mac computer, determine the date of the earliest transaction in this company file.
    1. Select the Reports menu and select Custom Transaction Detail Report.
    2. Click the Dates drop-down arrow and select All.
    3. Click the Sort By drop-down arrow and select Date.
  2. Condense the file
    1. Select the File menu and select Utilities>Condense Data.
    2. Enter a date prior to the earliest transaction date and select All Audit Trail Information.
  3. After the Condense completes, convert the file again.

     

If you have special characters in the Memo field of a transaction, edit the characters:

  1. Select the Reports menu and select Custom Transaction Detail Report.
  2. Click the Dates drop-down arrow and select All.
  3. Click the Modify Report button and ensure that the Memo column is selected in the Columns list.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Check the Memo column in the report for any memos that contain special characters or more than 50 characters.
  6. If required, edit any transactions to remove special characters or to shorten memos exceeding 50 characters.
  7. Convert the file again.
