Error -6098, 0: You must be logged in to Windows as a user who has administrator privileges

When attempting to open a company within QuickBooks, the following message is received:

To start or stop hosting multi-user access to company files, you must be logged in to Windows as a user who has administrator privileges. (-6098, 0)

How to fix it
If the issue persists, ensure that the Windows user is an Administrator or Power User.
  1. Ensure that hosting is configured correctly (the computer where the files are located should be hosting, the workstations should not be hosting)
  2. QuickBooks requires users to be a member of at least the Power User group, but recommends the Administrator group for best results.

This issue is also caused by switching windows users while QuickBooks is still open. When you go to open a company file with the new user, it will cause  -6098, 0.

  • Log off the other user or reboot to resolve the issue.
