Error "This file does not have a program associated with it.", when opening PDF Attached Document

You attempt to open a PDF file that is attached within QuickBooks (using Attached Documents) and you see this error:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default program's control panel."

Why this is happening

This issue can be caused by one of the following:

  • There is no program associated in Windows to open PDF files
  • Program association is not working properly
  • Damaged Windows user
How to fix it

Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.
