Errors: -6129, -143 or -6000, -99003: An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to access the file

When you try to open the company file as a non-Admin QuickBooks user in single-user or multi-user mode, you see one the following error messages:

  • An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to access the company file. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact Intuit Technical Support and provide them with the following error codes: (-6129,-143).
     
  • An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to access the company file. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact Intuit Technical Support and provide them with the following error codes: (-6000,-99003).

Your data may be damaged.

How to fix it

Intuit recommends 3 solutions for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try both to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1: Create and restore a portable company file

  1. Open the company file and log in as the Admin user.
  2. (Optional) If you are not in single-user mode, from the File ment and choose Switch to Single-user Mode.
  3. Go to Create and restore a portable company file page and follow the instructions there.

If you still see the error, try the next solution.

Solution 2: Make sure the folder storing your company file isn't a hidden folder

  1. Right-click the folder your company file is stored in.
  2. Choose Properties.
  3. On the General tab, click to clear the Hidden checkbox.
  4. Click OK.

If you still see the error, try the next solution.

Solution 3: Run the QuickBooks File Doctor

Download, install and run the QuickBooks File Doctor.
