Windows Explorer closes when moving, copying, or renaming a .QBW file

Windows Explorer closes unexpectedly (crashes/stopped working) when you try to move, copy, or rename a QuickBooks Desktop file (QBW, QBA, QBB, etc).

How to fix it

Disable pop-up descriptions for folder and desktop items

  1. On your keyboard, press + R to open the Run window.
  2. Type in Control Panel.
  3. On the Control Panel window, search for "folder" and choose Folder Options (Windows 8, 7 and Vista) or File Explorer Options (Windows 10)
  4. Under the View tab, uncheck Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items.
  5. Click Apply and OK to save the changes.
If, after following the steps provided in this article, you continue to experience the same issue, the problem might be related to a Windows component. QuickBooks supports limited Windows functionalities (i.e. renaming, moving, or copying files). We recommend that you contact your computer's manufacturer, Microsoft or an IT professional to get further assistance on this issue.
