Error -6000, -816: QuickBooks was unable to open the company file because the file is in use

When you try to restore a QuickBooks Desktop backup , you see this error:

(-6000,-816): QuickBooks was unable to open the company file because the file is in use. Another person may be in the process of opening the company file.
Why this is happening

You might see this error if:

  • The file is in use by another program or service.
  • QuickBooks Desktop  is conflicting with the Auto-Protect Scanning feature of Symantec Endpoint Protection
  • Symantec Endpoint Protection client 11.0.5 Release Update (RU) 5 or Small Business client 12.0.1 is installed on the server that is hosting QuickBooks
  • The file is damaged and will not open
  • When running a third-party backup application that has the ability to back up files while they are open, such as JenieSoft. If this type of software is installed and running on your system, it must be uninstalled or configured to not scan .qbw file extensions or integrated files such as Fixed Asset Manager or Financial Statement Designer.
How to fix it

Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.
