Error 15270: The update did not complete successfully

When updating QuickBooks Desktop, you receive the following error:

[Error 15270] The payroll update did not complete successfully.

How to fix it

Intuit recommends more than one solution for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1:  Reset QuickBooks Desktop updates

  1. Restart QuickBooks Desktop
    1. Close QuickBooks Desktop
    2. Open QuickBooks Desktop as you normally would
      Important: Click Install Later in the QuickBooks Update Service window if it appears
  2. Choose Help > Update QuickBooks
  3. In the Update QuickBooks window:
    1. Click the Update Now tab
    2. Click to select the Reset Updates checkbox, then click the Get Updates button
    3. Click OK to confirm the reset
  4. When the update is complete, the Get Updates button becomes active and the words "Update Complete" appear below
  5. Restart QuickBooks:
    1. Close QuickBooks
    2. Open QuickBooks as you normally would
  6. Click the Install Now button in the QuickBooks Update Service message.  The update should install successfully
  7. Install the latest Payroll updates (if there is a payroll subscription with this file)
    1. Choose Employees > Get Payroll Updates
    2. Make sure Download entire payroll update is selected
    3. Hold CTRL Key down and click Update (this will reset your updates so it can load properly)

Solution 2: Rename Paysub.ini

  1. Download and run PayrollSubini.exe on the computer encountering the error (this tool may need to be run on multiple computers if you are in a network environment)
  2. Choose Employees > Get Payroll Updates
  3. Make sure Download entire payroll update is selected
  4. Click Update
