POS Error 180038 and 180037 - Cannot settle credit card transactions

When attempting to settle credit card transactions, the following error is returned:

POS Error 180038 and/or 180037: Cannot settle credit card transactions. Receipts in progress or orphan receipts (improper shutdown) were found.
Why this is happening

The batch of credit cards may need to be forced closed or there is damage to the company data file.

How to fix it
  1. Ensure none of your workstations are creating a receipt and then close Point of Sale on the Server Workstation.
    Important: Do not reboot in the meantime.
  2. Open Point of Sale. Error 180037 will display as expected.
  3. Update the program to the most current release.
    Note: If Point of Sale is already on the latest release, it may be necessary to re-download and re-apply it.
  4. If the issue persists, contact Intuit Payment Solutions at 800.558.9558 and request that they force close the batch and run a debug to reset the batch number.
